CITY ARE LEFT TO RUE LATE SMASH AND GRAB

Portsmouth Smith 37, O’Hara 88, Kanu 89 3 Hull City Folan 27, 73 2 Attendance: 16,513 Away fans: 1,000est FOR 88 minutes at Fratton Park, the decision to call time on Phil Brown’s historic reign as Hull City manager looked like the ultimate masterstroke.

Then came the bitter finale to Iain Dowie’s opening game in charge and the gamble instead began to look futile.

Suffering the cruellest of blows to their survival ambitions, the fresh eyes of Dowie failed to halt City’s ominous downward spiral.

After conceding two goals inside 64 disastrous late seconds to see their world turned upside down, the galling nature of the latest defeat ensures the positivity injected by Dowie may already be under threat.

A brace from forgotten man Caleb Folan had seen the Tigers’ 2-1 up with just two minutes remaining to promise victory and an instant sense of vindication for chairman Adam Pearson.

Then, with little more than two minutes remaining, all those hopes of Dowie inspiring an immediate resurrection were undone by two crippling Portsmouth goals.

First came an equaliser from Jamie O’Hara and then a sucker punch from Kanu to bring a gutsy Portsmouth the unlikeliest of wins.

With 1,000 travelling fans looking on with disbelief, it was then you began to wonder if City’s name was destined to join Portsmouth’s in next year’s Championship.

“It’s like I’ve been punched in the stomach. Several times,” said Dowie, and his eager return to management demanded empathy.

Bouncing around his technical area with passion and enthusiasm, the new manager had been teased with the prospect of delivering City”s first away win in over 12 months at the very first time of asking.

Instead, he must now protect what little optimism is left from his opening fixture and encourage the green shoots of recovery.

Defeat to Portsmouth was the fifth in succession for City and with three points and an inferior goal difference to make up on 17th- placed West Ham in eight games, it is becoming an increasingly tall order for Dowie.

Bullishly, he demanded optimism ahead of his first home fixture against Fulham this weekend but time and luck are fast running out.

The nature of the latest set-back in the quest for survival was familiarly painful.

Just as Arsenal had robbed City of a point in the third minute of stoppage time to signal the end of Brown’s tenure, Portsmouth snatched three priceless points from Dowie’s back pocket.

The obvious danger will be deflation but this was not all doom and gloom as Dowie had a collection of players desperate to deliver for him and the club.

There was shape, there was energy and there was desire – everything and more the new boss had demanded from his troops when addressing them for the first time last Thursday.

There was no change in fortune, though, no matter how hard he tried.

A recall for Folan after a late injury to Jozy Altidore looked like being the twist Dowie craved after he turned home Craig Fagan’s low drive close on the half hour and gave City their just rewards after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had struck the post.

For Folan, the goal could not have been sweeter.

Cast into the shadows under Brown after an ill-fated loan move to Middlesbrough sparked a war of words, a return to prominence was immediate under Dowie.

Even after slack defending had seen Tommy Smith cancel out his opening goal close to half-time, Folan restored City’s lead 17 minutes from time with a cool finish from Richard Garcia’s through- ball.

Eighteen months had passed since Folan’s previous goal – the winner in City’s opening Premier League fixture against Fulham – but this brace sadly failed to be as decisive.

A Portsmouth equaliser looked unlikely as the Tigers confidently played down the clock – until Jimmy Bullard was penalised for a raised foot on the edge of the City box.

Up stepped O’Hara to fire in a delightful equaliser with his left- foot and that, you thought, was that.

But, as has become all too familiar, the Tigers conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Garcia’s stray pass played in Nadhir Belhadj to pull back for Kanu, who finished through the desperate final attempts of the City defence.

For a Portsmouth side that have seen four owners bring administration and certain relegation this season, Fratton Park was a fitting scene for such chaos.

One missed opportunity has now passed Dowie and his men by.

With just eight games remaining, they cannot afford too many more.

THE VERDICT Plenty of spirit, plenty of positives, but no points, thanks to two late Portsmouth goals which wrecked Iain Dowie’s hopes of making a winning start to his tenure as Hull City boss.

Caleb Folan’s two strikes were Tigers’ highlights in the 3-2 defeat.

It’s difficult not to think City may well live to rue Saturday’s late show from O’Hara and Kanu.

THE BOSSES DOWIEON Tigers’ defeat at Fratton Park…

“It’s a cruel, cruel game but there was enough spirit and tenacity to please me.”

Folan’s double strike…

“Caleb looked powerful and he responded in great fashion.”

IRD's pursuit 'wrong in law'

IRD’s pursuit ‘wrong in law’

0 Comments | Press, The; Christchurch, New Zealand, Jul 27, 2010

Former Securitibank boss John George Russell is challenging he owes $138 million in back taxes and penalties, his lawyer Simon Judd says.

But the lawyer says the IRD’s pursuit for tax is wrong in law and that his client has never personally earned a cent from the tax arrangements at the heart of the decades-long legal stoush.

Russell continued his lengthy battle with the IRD with an appeal that began yesterday in the High Court at Auckland against the huge tax assessment.

Russell is challenging an Income Tax Statement of Account for tax and penalties for the years 1985 to 2000 which the court was told had grown because of penalties and interest owed to a contested personal tax liability of $138m as of April this year.

Russell, now in his 70s and who retired more than a decade ago, did not appear as he is confined to hospital.

Since the late 1980s Russell has been involved in legal tussles with the IRD over various arrangements designed to reduce or avoid liability for income tax on companies he consulted to.

He formed Commercial Management Ltd in 1976-77 after Securitibank went under. He then consulted to dozens of companies which signed up to various forms of a scheme known as the “Russell template arrangements” which were meant to reduce their tax bills. There were three different partnerships involving six companies during the period in the tax assessment.

All of them were controlled by Russell but his lawyer Simon Judd said “the fact Russell was a director is irrelevant”

In contrast to

In contrast to second mortgages and home equity loans, it allows homeowners to borrow money as needed using a check book or credit card. Home equity line of credit has lower interest rates. However, to avail these loans, repayment potential is essential. If payments are not made in time, the financial institution has the legal right for foreclosure of the borrower’s house. It is therefore necessary to compare the interest rates offered by various financial institutions before a final choice is made.

Kid-friendly online search engines provide more opportunities

Kid-friendly online search engines provide more opportunities for students to research their favorite interests.

Targeted book reports and a plan for integrating the curriculum can help expand learning for every member of a class. For instance, say the kids in a classroom are studying Greek mythology; providing a variety of books and magazines on the topic, as well as on the history, social structure, scientific and mathematical concepts, and literature of ancient Greece can be the basis for an exciting group learning experience. Children can choose a book or magazine article and write a report to present to the class; other children can write poems or short stories based on what they’ve read, or paint or draw pictures. These creations can be presented to the class during a sharing time, and then, using a computer and printer, copied and distributed to every member of the class so each student can create a book or notebook of the work of the entire class.

Plan to have all schools connected to the Net

Plan to have all schools connected to the Net

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 28, 2010 | by Shahrum Sayuthi

MALAYSIA will strive to have advanced Internet facilities at its schools, similar to those in South Korea.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is on a four- day working visit here, said efforts would be made to ensure all schools have Internet connectivity, which would greatly improve the education system in the country.

It was an eye-opener for members of the Malaysian delegation led by Muhyiddin when they were told yesterday that all schools in South Korea had been connected to the Internet for over a decade.

In a briefing at the Korean Education and Research Information Service (Keris), they were told that a five-year plan to connect all schools was mooted in 1996 but its implementation was completed within just three years.

Keris president Dr S.Y. Chun said the National Education Information System stored the profile record of each student and connected parents, teachers and the education authority via the Internet.

He said the government had pushed for wider Internet connectivity among the population to support the system and this had resulted in almost all households in the country having Internet access by 2004.

“The system helps our teachers, students and parents to participate in almost all aspects of education.”

Muhyiddin and his entourage were later given a demonstration on how the Keris system worked at the Hanam Information Industry High School, which is regarded as one of the top schools in South Korea.

The system, among others, enables parents to check the performances of their children based on the profiles stored in Keris. They may then make online inquiries to a teacher or request for counselling sessions for their children, if necessary.

The profiles contain information ranging from what the children ate at school to general health and grades.

Muhyiddin, who was impressed by the demonstration, inquired about the details of the system and the cost of its upkeep during the question-and-answer session.

He was told by the teachers and parents present that the system had worked well and greatly contributed in improving the learning environment in schools.

Some of the teachers also claimed the additional duties, including inputting students’ profiles, had not burdened them but had instead made their overall work easier.

At the end of the briefing, Muhyiddin said the government would strive to create a similar system in Malaysia.

“It will be great to have such a system for our schools.”

The actual settings you can experiment

The actual settings you can experiment with. I have defocused a near and far subject in the sample image on this page, (view thru window) and (picture / brick wall) near. You can also see the comparison with the non-edited version of the image.

The impact of adopting the depth of field phenomenon cannot be overestimated. It can make a colossal impact on your renderings.

Earlier I stated, ?Nearly all supposedly “Photorealistic Images” suffer from the same affliction, ?perfection?.

I chose the word affliction purposely.

The reason I believe it’s an affliction is because you are using Photorealistic Images to sell your Buildings, Architecture and Products. It helps to show typically what the view looks like across the way, but people know what birds and trees look like. You don’t want your potential clients commenting on how nice the house is across the river. You want them to focus on YOUR design. Depth of Field gives clarity to the image by de-cluttering the detail and “focus” on what matters (your design).

NOBU BERKELEY 15 Berkeley Street, W1 (020-7290 9222). Mon-Sun Pounds 150 …..

Surroundings at Nobu Park Lane have always seemed to me a bit David Brent and the phone is not answered after 5pm when you ring to book.

At this new outpost there is a no-bookings policy (except for parties of six) and a glamorous downstairs bar in which to wait and spend money.

Upstairs designer David Collins has fashioned a Magic Kingdom with flattering lighting.

Wood-fired ovens deliver novel dishes, as does the hibachi table with its built-in grills. Money no object, order Wagyu beef seared before your very eyes.

SAM’S BRASSERIE 11 Barley Mow Passage, W4 (020-8987 0555). Mon- Sun Pounds 90 …..

Sam Harrison has worked as manager of Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstowand before that in Sydney for two years. The impeccable manners of an old Etonian coupled with an Aussie- flavoured understanding of easygoing eating out is a winning formula and his former boss Rick Stein has had the good sense to invest in it. Rufus Wickham who has worked with Rowley Leigh at Kensington Place is head chef. The modern menu that mostly roams Western Europe also puts garam masala with roasted plaice.

Very Stein. See also bar review, opposite.

INDAN ZING 236 King Street, W6 (020-8748 5959). Mon-Sun Pounds 54 …..

Chef/proprietor Manoj Vasaikar previously made a popular success of a small short-lived restaurant in Putney called Just India.

Locals appreciated the authentic cooking and modest prices. The same virtues apply at his second own-venture which has rather more serious decor and the air of being here to stay. Manoj, who has cooked at Veeraswamy (in the same group as Amaya), sees the way Indian food is going designer plates and an emphasis on lightness but doesn’t lose sight and flavour of what we all like about going out for an Indian.

THE PUMPHOUSE 1 New River Avenue, N8 (020-8340 0400). Mon-Sun Pounds 74 …..

The boondocks of North London are well served by the two Mosaica restaurants in Wood Green and Tottenham. Now, one of the owners, John Mountain, has brought his enthusiasm for good cooking and affable service to Hornsey and converted a former hydraulic pumping station into a dramatic lofty bar and restaurant encased in the building’s original while tiling, now mellowed and foxed with age. The simplicity of the menu is agreeably deceptive since dishes are prepared with skill and care in the open kitchen. I dare say evenings get noisy.

MAZE 10-13 Grosvenor Square W1 (020-7107 0000). Mon-Sun Pounds 120 …..

Price rises were inevitable at this latest Gordon Ramsay enterprise. That’s the way he does things, but what you pay is still a steal for the talents of head chef Jason Atherton. The restaurant’s title reflects the long and winding road that you can take through a menu of small dishes the waiters suggest six per person plus dessert. Each dish displays originality and perspicacity but if you fear sensation overload, there is also a three-course menu of normal-size dishes
